"Will Big Business Save the Earth?" asked a provocative op-ed piece recently published in the New York Times. Based on the wildly varied responses from readers, it's safe to say the debate remains a lively one.
This year, Friends' programming will focus on the them of green business — what it means, how it is being executed and what some of the options are locally.

Travel Sketching
with Nina Weiss
Saturday
August 15
1 pm – 4 pm
|
|
You love to draw, and you love to travel. How best to combine the two? Set in the beautiful forested grounds of Ryerson Woods, this class will teach you to maximize your drawing experience drawing the landscapes of your travels. Emphasis includes: how to extract your vision from the landscape using elements of composition; how to render basic forms of the landscape; how expressive line and gesture are used to capture the landscape; and how color can be used as an exciting addition to your drawing. Using water-based pens and colored pencils, students will begin their own travel sketchbooks using inspirational local landscapes. Nina Weiss is a nationally recognized artist who has been painting and drawing the landscape for over 25 years (ninaweiss.com). Water-soluble Sketch pens will be available for purchase from Nina. |

The Green Future of Lake County
Thursday
September
30
7 - 9pm
|
How green will Lake County be in 15 years? 30 years? What are
the predictions for the green future of our region?
This panel will explore these questions of sustainability
from multiple perspectives. Panelists include:
·
Randy Blankenhorn,
Executive Director of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for
Planning will discuss GO TO 2040, the official comprehensive
planning campaign for metropolitan Chicago.
We’ll learn how Lake County fits into the regional plan,
to be released in October 2010.
Metropolitan Chicago’s prosperity will depend on how
successfully the region implements GO TO 2040 policies,
strategies, and investments in land use, transportation,
economic development, environment, housing and human services.
·
Jerry Weber,
President of the College of Lake County,
will explain how CLC is focused on preparing a green work force
trained in green-collar jobs. They are developing a green
economy center and a sustainability center to implement green
solutions and sustainable technologies for their organization,
as well as to support businesses and residents of Lake County.
Part of Weber’s vision is to see sustainability centers at all
community colleges in Illinois.
·
Tom Hahn,
Executive Director of the Lake County Forest Preserve District,
will address LCFPD goals, including their 40 acres of open space
for every 1000 people initiative, and how they the District is
spending the 2009 referendum funds.
·
A representative from corporate citizen, Abbott.
George Ranney, President and CEO of Chicago Metropolis 2020,
will moderate.
Welcome Center. $15 ($10 FRW members).
