Smith River Cabin As I enter the woods The forest is quiet. As I walk, my footsteps and heavy breathing Finally, I reach Smith River Cabin, For me silence September 2007 |

Obituary He was only six years old. The sage Des Plaines river Born in northern Wisconsin, Beauregard lived As a youth he frolicked with his sibling kitt His father was an important official At the age of two years, Beauregard told his father He swam south and watched the river water So, he settled in Ryerson Woods, built a A few weeks ago, I saw traces of Beauregard. Finally, his heart gave out after years Once he performed for me Now he is gone, April 2008 Where the meadow ends, Just before Christmas, on my walk, Up ahead of me the flock has landed. Some of the birds fly Some stay to look for juicy worms A little farther along, where a still backwater brook Beyond the brook the flock thins out When I later have circled back December 2007 Walk to the River On an early spring morning, I notice dead logs across the wooded floor The trail is sandy and rock-strewn. Soon I reach the Des Plaines river, The walk back is less eventful with only vegetation to be seen. 2007 |
