SMITH NATURE SYMPOSIUM

Pieces of the Sky:  Spring Migration as Science and Magic

Keynote Speaker — Kenn Kaufman

Every spring season, extraordinary numbers of birds move northward across the face of North America. Their pathway spans the entire width of the continent, and even extends far offshore. Some of these birds travel many thousands of miles, and their numbers run into the billions. These little travelers perform remarkable feats of strength, endurance, and pinpoint accuracy in navigating across land and sea. And yet, most of the time, this vast parade goes completely unnoticed by most human beings.

After traveling the world to observe migratory birds, internationally renowned birder, conservationist and author Kenn Kaufman has spent the last eight spring seasons on the shores of Lake Erie, and he is now writing a book about the phenomenon of spring migration. In this program, heavily illustrated with pictures and maps, he will share some perspectives on these tiny migrants and their huge journeys.

The evening included a reception, art exhibition, benefit dinner and silent auction.

Warblers for Beginners

All those colorful little migratory warblers that light up the trees like ornaments in spring can seem difficult to recognize. In this class, you will learn to identify warblers through their song, plumage and habitat. Get briefed on these birds’ vocalizations before heading into the woods to listen and watch. Warblers can often be just as active toward the end of the day as they are in the morning. Bring a pair of binoculars and dress for the weather.  Your instructor is Sheryl DeVore, author of Birds of Illinois, and chief editor of Meadowlark, the journal of the Illinois Ornithological Society.  Presented in partnership with the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Kingbird Highway: The Biggest Year in the Life of an Extreme Birder

Oxford Still Life XVI by Susan Kraut January 6 through February 28, 2013

Sky/Place

Richard Deutsch and Susan Kraut, both long-time teachers at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, are painters who have always been interested in the natural world. They use the medium of paint to express the visual experience they have in the landscape.  Both artists do preliminary studies, including drawings and quick painted sketches, while on location, and construct the finished works back in their studios.  The paintings become a fusion of the immediacy of their initial experience with the reflective, ordered quality which memory provides.  Among the works exhibited are paintings of Irish skies and landscapes from a study trip in Western Ireland which they taught together during the summer of 2011.

Brushwood. Free. No registration required.  Exhibition runs through February 28, 2013.

Genius Loci: Listening to Nature’s Muse

The ancient Romans believed that every place on Earth is protected by a guardian spirit or genius loci, literally “spirit of place.” Today, we use this phrase to mean the collective characteristics—cultural, environmental, and psychological—that define a specific locale and distinguish it from all others. Throughout history, some of the most successful works of art and architecture were created by people who captured the genius loci of natural places. Their works appear to fit seamlessly within the environments that inspired them. This legacy of listening to and learning from the genius loci continues today as a new generation of artists and designers responds to Nature.  These artists include:

Meaghan Burritt Jessica Calek Doug DeWitt Jennifer Hines

Brian Johnsen + Sebastian Schmaling   Anne Kauff   Rachel Kauff

Michael McGuire   Barry Phipps  Cynthia Winter  Jacob Wener

What lessons are these contemporary artists and designers deriving from different natural regions such as prairies, forests, river valleys, and lakefronts?  The works in this group exhibition, Genius Loci: Learning from Nature’s Muse, address this central question. Genius Loci is curated by Franck Mercurio.

Will Bison Roam in Illinois?

Illinois is often called the Prairie State—but how much true native prairie remains?  Can it be saved?  Will bison ever roam here again?  And what can this unique ecosystem teach us about living and working on the land in our region?  Hear from the experts about the return of the bison to Illinois and the exciting work taking place at Nachusa Grasslands’ 3000 acres of restored, reconstructed, and remnant prairie.  Since 1986, hundreds of volunteers have worked at Nachusa to replant former corn and bean fields and recreate a vision of 1800 Illinois' mosaic of prairie, savanna and wetlands.

The Prairie and the Prairie School of Architecture

The North Shore is rich with examples of the Prairie School of Architecture, both famous masterpieces and lesser-known gems. But is the “Prairie” name simply historical coincidence? Did the bold new approach to architecture pioneered by America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright – characterized by dramatic horizontal lines and masses, open interior spaces, and the use of simple, natural materials – draw something important from the Midwestern prairie itself? Join David Bagnall, Curator and Director of Interpretation for the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust, for an exploration of the connections between the physical prairie and the architectural style that is a part of our landscape—and, ultimately, of the relationship between nature and human creativity.

Cabin Fever:  A Suburban Father’s Search for the Wild

Wes Jackson is president and founder of The Land Institute, an organization dedicated to developing an agricultural system with the ecological stability of the prairie and a grain yield comparable to that from annual crops.  Drawing knowledge from the way the world has worked for millions of years, Wes seeks to farm in nature’s image by shifting away from the use of monoculture annual grains (like wheat) to inter-mixed (polyculture) perennial grains.  Holding degrees in biology, botany and genetics, he is a leader in the international sustainable agriculture movement and has been recognized as a Pew Conservation Scholar and a MacArthur Fellow, as well as presented with the prestigious Right Livelihood Award ('Alternative Nobel Prize') for outstanding vision and work on behalf of our planet and its people.  The evening includes a reception, art exhibition and silent auction.

SPECIMENS

Photographs by Julie Meridian

A constant collector of nature’s commonplace wonders, Julie Meridian is an artist with a reverent curiosity about the natural world.   Inspired by the carefully classified and preserved specimens in the vast collections of the Field Museum, she began photographing her own collection.  Instead of documentation, her intent is to convey the unfathomable mysteries the specimens exude, exploring themes of fragility and endurance, beauty and decay, chance and destiny, life and death.

Employing a simple background of white paper and constantly shifting natural light, Meridian uses her camera to preserve each specimen in an ephemeral framework constructed solely of light and shadow. Her reward is the startling moment when the mundane reality of the specimen undergoes a quiet metamorphosis.  Hovering between specimen and poetry, science and art, the moment challenges her to measure the immeasurable: the inevitability of loss and the transcendence of beauty. To order the book Specimens, see the artist's website, juliemeridianphotographs.com.

An Evening with Richard Louv:

Author of The Nature Principle

A talk with acclaimed author Richard Louv, who coined the term "Nature Deficit Disorder."  His ground-breaking bestseller, Last Child in the Woods, linked the lack of nature in children's lives with the rise in obesity, attention disorders and depression.  This galvanized an international movement to reconnect children with nature.  Louv discussed his new book, The Nature Principle, which offers a new vision of the future, in which our lives are as immersed in nature as they are in technology.  This future, available to all of us right now, offers better psychological, physical and spiritual healthfor people of every age.  "A reconnection to the natural world is fundamental to human health," he writes, asking, "What would our lives be like if our days and nights were as immersed in nature as they are in electronics?"  Louv's timely, inspiring and important work offers renewed hope while challenging us to rethink the way we live.

This free event was presented through the cooperation of Friends of Ryerson Woods, Institute for Integrated Environmental Education, Lake Forest Book Store, Lake Forest Open Lands and Conserve Lake County.  The evening included an author talk and book signing.
