Friends of Ryerson Woods

Smith Symposium
Now in its 23rd year, the Smith Symposium is a series of lectures, workshops and nature walks held each spring at Ryerson Woods. Renowned keynote speakers have included nationally recognized conservation and wildlife specialists such as Roger Tory Peterson, Merlin Tuttle, John Fitzpatrick and Bill Kurtis. Workshops are taught by professionals and draw hundreds of participants.

Ned Ryerson Trail
This half mile interpretive nature trail loops through a beautiful woods and meadow. To enable visitors with disablities to better enjoy and learn about nature, the Trail has a wheelchair-accessible surface.

Youth Environmental Symposium
The annual Youth Environmemtal Symposium provides high school students from throughout Lake County an opportunity to learn about the environment. Each autumn, a full day of interactive, hands-on workshops feature topics such as environmental careers and stewardship of nature.

Intern and Volunteer Programs
Friends of Ryerson Woods helps to support the Lake County Forest Preserves' intern and volunteer programs, expanding the number of programs offered to individuals, families and school groups each year.

Educational Field Trips
In order to promote environmental stewardship and inspire people to act with conservation values, Friends of Ryerson Woods organizes field trips to other important natural sites in the region so that organization members can learn about habitat preservation and restoration, native plant and animal communities, and open space issues.
